CURRENT GROUP NEWS December 10, 2013: Welcome, New Members!
Greetings, everyone! I'm Isabelle the Growlithe of the Town Hall. I'm here to provide everyone with the most current news that the group has to offer! I look forward to bringing you the scoop whenever I am able to! Here's the most recent information I can share with you...
As many of you may have noticed, the judging process has finally come to a close, and new members have been accepted into the group. Welcome, new residents of Pokette Town! We will give you a more thorough greeting below. For the moment, we have a bit of business to attend to for those who applied and were declined. We would like to address the most common issues we saw throughout this opening to make it clear about what we don't really wish to see in future character applications.
FOR THOSE WHO WERE DECLINED... Despite this being our smallest opening yet (Only 68 join requests, instead of our usual 100+!), many applications did not meet the group standards that are in place. An unfortunate majority of join requests were declined with reasons. We made sure to give everyone individual reasons as to why, but here is a list of our most commonly repeated mistakes:
-- No Join Request form and/or Character Application: There were a few applicants who sent in a blank join request or requests full of other things. That's fine and dandy, but that is not the process of how our join requests work. This action shows us that you did not bother to educate yourself through our journal entries that provide much information. In the end, you were declined. Not providing a completed character application and saying that you will fill it out later does not make things any better.
There were a few applicants who sent in blank join requests or who filled their join requests with information unrelated to the group. This may be fine for some other communities, but this is not how the process works for PKMN-Crossing! Applicants who did this showed us that they were unwilling or neglected to read over PKMN-Crossing's rules and guidelines. We know it's a lot of information to take in, but we cannot accept members who refuse to read our journals or who do not even have an application! In the future, please review these two journals: [How to Join] & [Character Creation]
-- Short History sections: There were a few histories that were very lacking in length and detail of what we would expect. We expect a minimum of 3 paragraphs (a beginning, middle, and conclusion as to why they are moving to Pokette Town) with at least 5 sentences in each. You are more than welcome to add beyond the minimum, however! So long as it is not a struggle for our mod team and others to read through. Something that is about the length of a short story is preferable. Too little does not give us insight to your character, and too much gives us a headache when reviewing. In the future, please review this journal for an idea of what we expect to read in a character's history section: [Character Creation]
-- Overly dramatic History sections: There were a few histories where characters' backstories were far too dark or severe for the group's setting. This is an Animal Crossing x Pokémon group. While we love it when a character's history has excitement and flair, many applicants pushed the line and went beyond what we would consider acceptable for PKMN-Crossing's environment. We noticed that a good number of these applicants seemed to be leaning towards what one might expect from soap opera dramas, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, or themes of a similar vein. If you have little to no familiarity with Animal Crossing or do not understand what this group is aiming for, we would highly suggest you read about the Animal Crossing series HERE.
-- Offensive Stereotypes: In this opening, we noticed on more than one occasion the use of unusual gender preferences. While we love diversity and it's very exciting to see such an interesting variety of characters, this is a sensitive topic that needs to be handled with care. Gender preferences that step outside of social norms are not features to add to your character simply to make them unique. Though this is an environment in which characters of all lifestyles and denominations are welcome, this issue is one that needs to be treated with thought and consideration. We have accepted applications of this nature in the past that were well done, so please do not think it is hopeless! It just makes matters more difficult on our part when we are judging applications because of these curve balls, so to speak. Please be respectful in the construction of your characters, and do not hesitate to do your research when it comes to things you don't quite understand. It is much better to fully grasp what it is you are writing about than to risk offending others with inaccurate conclusions. After all, it's very unusual for a character's gender or sexuality to come up in everyday conversation. It is a very delicate and personal topic for most!
-- "Shiny Colored = Different and Bullied" Trope: This has grown to be a VERY common dislike of ours. All of these shiny-colored Pokémon wanting to move in to Pokette Town just because they were bullied for being 'different' in color and want to run away from it all. We see this time and time again, and it never fails: these characters are never done well and are not what we are looking for when we go through the judging process. In fact, it has become so overdone that we rather have Arceus strike us down than review another application with this trope. Harsh words, but very true nonetheless.
We see this so often, we've really come to dislike it! Many, many shiny-colored Pokémon in our incoming join requests are described as wanting to move to Pokette Town for being bullied about their color. We see this time and time again, and we have yet to see one done well. This is the way we see it: In the canon Pokémon universe, shiny colors are very exotic and wanted -- badly! Trainers of all kinds treat shiny Pokémon as if they were worth their weight in gold! For some reason, however, many applicants creating shiny pokemon have chosen to interpret their unusual coloring as a negative thing, which is responded to with bullying.
Due to this repeated and growing problem, we have decided to put a limit on shiny-colored Pokémon, much like the species limit explained on our [PKMN List] journal. We will be making updates to our blogs about this, but in the future we will be VERY picky about shiny colored Pokémon applicants. We will only be allowing 1 shiny-colorization per species. Members who currently have a shiny-colored character will have a (★) symbol placed next to their username on the PKMN List so that others are aware that the shiny slot is taken. We want to stress that this trope is something we DO NOT WANT to see anymore!
Please don't feel as though this limits your creativity. Did you know that we allow customized versions of Pokémon colors, so long as they are not 'sparklemon'? YES. We do! It is because of the Animal Crossing world! Take a look at the [Villagers List] from the AC series and stroll through the various different villagers. Look at how all of them are different and unique in their style and colors. Some are based off robots, objects, or food to boot! This is something else we would love to see more of in the future! Unique colors and ideas make things exciting. Here is a wonderful, recent example of a custom-colored resident from one of our new members. You can check out how customized their resident is HERE for a better idea of what we are trying to explain. (Thank you, ~BlueKahlua, for letting us use your application as an example!)
These were the most common concerns and mistakes that we saw for this past group opening. We are currently looking at our calenders and have decided that our next public group opening will be sometime in the new year of 2014. We are shooting for the month of March, when spring arrives to town, to provide a fresh start for those may still be interested in joining us when that time comes. To those who were declined, we hope you'll be inspired by other ideas and possibly choose to try again in the future. If you have any questions that can't be answered by our group journals, please feel free to ask! We will try to assist you ASAP. We hope this addresses any questions and concerns about applications and character construction. We hope to see improvements in the future!
FOR THOSE WHO WERE ACCEPTED... We would like to extend a big fat WELCOME to all of you!!! You are now a member of PKMN-Crossing and a resident of Pokette Town! We have placed all of your information into our various group documents, but sometimes we do make small mistakes here and there. We would appreciate if you could double check the various links provided below to make sure that your username and character info is accurate, as well as check if you have access to our dA chats! Sometimes events take place there. If something does not fit the bill with your information, please leave a comment here stating what is inaccurate and we will fix our mistake ASAP.
From this moment on, new members are allowed to send submissions to our folders and go about their business within the group! Feel free to ask questions and hang out in the chats with all of us! We're looking forward to seeing all of you. No need to be shy! There will be plenty of holiday activities coming up soon, so keep your eyes peeled for those "Current Event" section updates. The Secret Delibird signups are still open until December 10 @ 11:00 PM (EST) if you and other members are interested in signing up for this event! Once again, thank you for you interest in the group, and welcome to our quaint community!
With this past opening coming to an end, we have accumulated data based on the join requests that we received in our group inbox. It's always very interesting to see the data sheet at the end of all of this whole process, so we would like to share it with everyone who may be curious! Which gender was more popular? What were the top picks for character species? Are there more males than female characters? So on, so forth. If you would like to see the ecember 2013 statistics, please take a look HERE. (Much thanks to our mod ~Lhumina for compiling this fascinating information for us!)
That's all the news I have for now, it seems. Besides that, I am here for any sort of assistance if you need it. Thank you for reading, dear resident!
CURRENT EVENTS December 6 - 10: Secret Delibird Signups
Winter has come to Pokette Town, Toy Day is not too far around the corner, and everyone is scattering about to find the perfect gifts for their loved ones. But how about spreading some holiday cheer to someone you may not know? We're talking about the Secret Delibird gift exchange! What is Secret Delibird, you ask? A great question! We like your curiosity!
It is basically a Secret Santa-styled event. What we do is take everyone who has signed up and shuffle all of their names in a hat - or a certain randomizing website! - then have them create a little something special to put under the tree for whomever they managed to get paired up with! It's all quite fun, and who knows, you could make someone's Toy Day and New Year very special. What we're looking for are people and Pokémon with spare time to spread a little magic. If you're interested in participating in this magical event of artistic cheer, please follow this link to read about our information: [ SECRET DELIBIRD INFO ]
On a side note: Do not fret, future members! The judging process is almost complete for new applications! You will have plenty of time to participate in signups for this event as soon as we get you settled into the group very soon. Thank you, everyone! We hope many are looking forward to this!
